Antiga família veneziana, de virtude clara e ancestral, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos por várias regiões da Itália. A origem deste apelido, segundo genealogistas de renome, deve ser procurada no topónimo com o mesmo nome, hoje aldeia do concelho de Cornedo Vicentino, provavelmente berço de um progenitor hoje desconhecido. Em todo o caso, esta casa foi provavelmente admitida nas honras e privilégios da cavalaria, graças aos méritos adquiridos na guerra de Candia, no comando de uma galé, por um tal Michele Savegnago.
