Le origini di Casa Savoia, e cioè i fatti che ad essa si riferiscono prima dell'anno 1000 (quindi avanti Umberto Biancamano), sono tuttora incerte. Nonostante i molteplici studi compiuti da istorici di gran valore e le ricerche sempre attivissime di documenti nuovi al riguardo, a nessun studioso fu ancora dato di precisarle in modo inconfutabile. "Le origini della Casa di Savoia rappresentano un problema storico attorno al quale si sono affaticati sin dal 1500 gli studiosi per venire ad una soluzione convincente, cosa non facile, perchè, mancando i documenti originali che comprovino le agnazioni dei primi Conti, si dovette procedere per congetture e servirsi delle uniche fonti possedute, cioè delle cronache di Savoia, le quali hanno l'inconveniente di non essere sincrone, ma del XV secolo.
