Antica famiglia fiorentina che, al dir del Mugnos, fu trapiantata in Sicilia dai fratelli Giovanni e Pietro, sotto il reggimento di Manfredo I, ricevendo importantissime cariche dalla Casa Sveva, alla quale eran sempre stati devotissimi. Giovanni, d'altronde, fu eletto rettore del popolo nel 1282 e castellano di Palermo; Pietro ebbe la castellania di Salemi, la quale, da re Federico III, nel 1300, venne al di lui figlio Giovanni confermata, dopo esser stato, questi, il difensore della corona e della potente famiglia dei Palizzi. Da lui, discese un altro Pietro, il quale ebbe il feudo di Casba, nonchè la castellania ed il feudo di Canetici. Nel 1391 fu creato procuratore generale giurato e regio familiare, con privilegio di re Martino, per cui i suoi posteri goderono del medesimo titolo di regio cavaliere.
