La genealogia documentata di questa famiglia, tra le ragguardevoli di Carpi, anticamente detta Bagassi, ascende non interrotta alla prima metà del secolo XV, incominciando con un Iacopino Bagassi morto già nel 1422. Nel 1470 (1 gennaio), Marco e Leonello Pio, signori di Carpi, rilasciarono ad Antonio di Paolo Bagassi un diploma col quale veniva accordato alla sua famiglia la "Castellania" che era una specie di cittadinanza più elevata e distinta che davasi se non a gente di merito e fidata de' Principi. Durante i secoli XVI-XVIII i membri di tale famiglia coprirono le primarie cariche cittadine, cioè di priori, di provvisori e massari generali. Sul principio del secolo XVII, un ramo si trasferì a Mantova dove si imparentò con la nobile e ricca famiglia Ricordati e nel marzo del 1674 fu fregiato dal duca di Mantova del titolo comitale trasmissibile ai discendenti nella persona di Giacinto che assume il cognome
