Antica famiglia, originaria di Torre del Greco, stabilitasi ad Alghero, per la pesca del corallo, nella seconda metà del secolo XVIII. Nel 1779 un Serafino, mercante, che però viene detto "patrizio di Torre del Greco", ottenne il cavalierato ereditario e la nobiltà. Suo figlio Stefano fu valente generale ed abile amministratore, trasferì la famiglia a Cagliari all'inizio del secolo XIX. Uno dei figli di Stefano fu il celebre tenore noto con il nome di Mario, gli altri continuarono le tradizioni militari della famiglia. Nella nota dei Feudatari, Nobili e Cavalieri, compilata dal R. Prefetto di Alghero e trasmessa, nel 1822, alla Segreteria di Stato e di Guerra presso il Viceré di Sardegna, nell'occasione dell'assunzione al trono del re Carlo Felice, è compreso il nome del cavalier Don Serafino Scandia, residente in Alghero. A questa nobile famiglia appartennero il general Don Carlo Scandia, collaboratore del generale Alberto Della Marmora nello studio
