Originaria di Candiano nel territorio Padovano, e della stessa consorteria dei Sanudi. Stabilita in Venezia, diede cinque dogi a quella repubblica; Pietro I nell'887 guerreggiò i Corsari di Dalmazia, e fu ucciso in battaglia navale; Pietro III nel 942 trattò con Berengario re d'Italia per istabilire i confini della Venezia, e guerreggiò coio corsari slavi e croati. Sotto il suo dogato avvenne il celebre fatto del rapimento delle spose. Pietro IV doge nel 959, fu più tiranno che magistrato. Vitale, doge nel 978. Domenico, vescovo di Torcello; altro Vitale conte di Padova e di Piacenza; ed un terzo Vitale, in cui si estinse questa famiglia, vescovo di Equilio e nel 967 Patriarca di Grado. Altro ramo. Questa famiglia rimonta alle origini della veneta repubblica, onorata de' primi carichi dello stato. Vanta un Pietro Candiani doge nel 887 ed altri. Fu portata in Sicilia al dir di Mugnos da un Andrea
