Derivati dai Gisla che anticamente possedettero il castello di Duliolo, si diramarono in Volterra e nell'Arcipelago grego, e dettero origine ai Ghillini di Vicenza e di Padova, ai Contughi di Ferrara, ai Scannapercora di Napoli, ed ai Moneta di Bologna. Ebbero il consolato nel 1176 e nel 1188, tre volte l'anzianato nel 1352-53, e furono di parte guelfa e quindi geremea. Presero parte alle lotte delle fazioni, e specialmente nel 1202 contro gli Asinelli loro feroci nemici, e quindi contro i Lambertini per cui i consoli confinarono questi a Mantova ed i Scannabecchi a Firenze. Ritornati gli uni e gli altri in patria, vennero di nuovo a battaglia nel 1271 e 1272, e si combatterono successivamente fino al 1284 in cui cagionarono un grosso tumulto popolare; una fuggiaschi e banditi nel capo, furono catturati nel contado e condotti all'estremo supplizio. I Scannabecchi presero parte alle prime crociate sotto il vessillo
