La famiglia pare sia oriunda da Bologna, da dove si trasferì a Modena fin dal secolo XIV. Si distinse per uomini d'eletto ingegno e di studio, e per cariche pubbliche civili ed ecclesiastiche, e fu assai prediletta dai Duchi Estensi. Forse per essersi segnalata soprattutto per uomini di studio e di toga porta nel suo stemma la penna e il calamaio, tenuti dal leone rampante con le zampe anteriori. Un Giovanni fu professore di diritto civile a Padova, poi auditore della Ruota di Genova, circa nel 1550. Morì a Modena il 29 luglio 1565. Lodovico, di Bartolomeo, di Giambattista, nato a Modena nel 1590, e detto "il cieco", perché privo della vista dalla nascita, fu insigne letterato. Studiò a Bologna , dove si laureò nel 1609, poi vi tenne la cattedra di eloquenza in quella Università con successo,
