Die Familie stammte offenbar aus Bologna, von wo aus sie seit dem 14. Jahrhundert nach Modena zog. Er zeichnete sich durch Männer mit auserwähltem Talent und Studium sowie durch zivile und kirchliche öffentliche Ämter aus und wurde von den Este-Herzögen sehr geschätzt. Vielleicht weil er speziell für Studien- und Toga-Männer gemeldet wurde, trägt er in seinem Wappen den Stift und das Tintenfass, die der zügellose Löwe mit den Vorderbeinen hält. Ein Giovanni war Professor für Zivilrecht in Padua, dann Auditor des Rades von Genua, ungefähr 1550. Er starb am 29. Juli 1565 in Modena. Lodovico von Bartolomeo von Giambattista, geboren 1590 in Modena, und "der Blinde" genannt. denn ohne von Geburt an zu sehen, war er ein angesehener Schriftsteller. Er studierte in Bologna, wo er 1609 seinen Abschluss machte, dann hatte er erfolgreich den Lehrstuhl für Beredsamkeit an dieser Universität inne und war von großer Zuneigung zu den Studenten umgeben.
