La familia aparentemente se originó en Bolonia, desde donde se mudaron a Módena desde el siglo XIV. Se distinguió por hombres de talento y estudio elegidos, y por cargos públicos civiles y eclesiásticos, y fue muy favorecido por los Duques de Este. Quizás debido a haber sido reportado particularmente para hombres de estudio y toga, él lleva en su escudo la pluma y el tintero, sostenidos por el león rampante con las patas delanteras. A Giovanni era profesor de derecho civil en Padua, luego auditor de la Rueda de Génova, hacia 1550. Murió en Módena el 29 de julio de 1565.
