A família aparentemente se originou de Bolonha, de onde se mudaram para Modena desde o século XIV. Distingue-se pelos homens de talento e estudo escolhidos e pelos cargos públicos civis e eclesiásticos, sendo muito favorecido pelos Este Dukes. Talvez por ter sido particularmente relatado para homens de estudo e toga, ele carrega no brasão a caneta e o tinteiro, segurados pelo leão desenfreado com as patas dianteiras.
