L'origine comune è manfredinga e precisamente da Manfredo I da cui Aimone III Conte di Vercelli il quale sposò la figlia di Adamo Caltignago che gli portò in feudo Cassano Tortonese. I discendenti di uno dei figli di Aimone assunsero il nome dalla signoria e dagli stessi ebbero origine le famiglie Arquata, Curoli, Opizzoni, Rovedi, Accatapani, Ospinelli, Guidobono ed altre, alcune delle quali tuttora fiorenti. Da altro figlio di Aimone discende Oberto, Conte di Vercelli, la cui unica figlia sposò (1040) Ottone II conte del Sacro Palazzo d'Italia, di Pavia e di Lomello, donde le famiglie comitali palatine di Sparvara, Langosco, Cerreto, Gambarana e Lomello che per consanguineità vantavano diritti su Cassano. La località, denominata ora Cassano Spinola, è situata a destra dello Scrivia sulla stradale che da Tortona conduce a Serravalle ed a pochi chilometri da quest'ultima.
