Lorsque, en l'an 1316, Castruccio Castracane se rendit maître de Lucca, de nombreuses familles guelfes sortirent de cette ville : parmi celles-ci les membres de la famille Scassi, qui y avaient excellé et avaient largement doté l'église de S. Quirico dell'Olivo. Cependant, ce nom de famille se trouve à Gênes avant même cette année-là, bien que sous la forme "De Sauro" ou "De Sori".
