Antica e nobile famiglia originaria di Chiavari, passata, nel 1688, con un Annibale, in Piacenza. Essa discende per diretta linea del magnifico Giovanni, quondam Angelino, ricordato nella cronaca di Chiavari nel libro VI nel quale si legge, che nel 1383 Giovanni, armato di una galea, fece parte della flotta genovese comandata da Nicolò Maruffo, che portò il re Lusignano in Cipro. Per varie volte, essendo questa famiglia molto ricca, possedendo casa in Genova, un palazzo a Chiavari e molti terreni e ragioni nella Val Daveto, del Taro e di Trebbia, prestò e fece sicurtà per la repubblica genovese (Atto Giovanni Barchi 13 ottobre 1382). I membri della famiglia possedettero il castello di Mileto, così da antichi rogiti erano distinti e chiamati i signori di Mileto.
