Antica e nobile famiglia tedesca, di antiche origini austriache, diffusasi in tutto il mondo, nel corso dei secoli. La chiara nobiltà di questa illustre casata, in tutte le sue ramificazioni, è confermata anche dalla sua presenza in alcuni dei più preziosi libri araldici, come "Siebmachers Wappenbuch", dell'artista araldico tedesco Johann Ambrosius Siebmacher, libro araldico in più volumi riguardante il nobiltà del Sacro Romano Impero. La prima culla di questa nobile famiglia fu l'Austria e, più precisamente, Gartenau (Salisburgo), dove la sua presenza è attestata prima del XV secolo. Il primo personaggio di cui abbiamo notizia è però un Albrecht Scheller che nel 1403 suggellò il cosiddetto "Igelbund", alleanza protettiva contro l'arbitrarietà del sovrano arcivescovo, tra le città di Salisburgo, Laufen, Tittmoning, Hallein e Radstadt.
