La antigua y muy noble familia genovesa, conocida como Schittini, Schittino, Schettino o Schiattino, pasó a Sicilia en los albores del siglo XVII y, más precisamente, a la ciudad de Palermo, que luego se extendió a lo largo de los siglos a varias regiones de Italia. Según los genealogistas autorizados, el origen de esta cognominación debe buscarse en una modificación del diminutivo de la aféresis del nombre "Francesco". Además, esta familia, en el desarrollo de su brillo, siempre ha logrado producir una serie de hombres que se han hecho famosos, en el empleo público, en profesiones liberales y eclesiásticas y en el servicio militar.
