Anticamente detta da Ottavo, o corrottamente dal Tavo, dopochè ebbe acquistato i beni dei Limena in detta villa, fu una delle più antiche e ricche di Padova. Discendeva essa, secondo il Salomonio, dagli Euganei, e secondo altri aveva dato origine ai conti di Lodi, i quali scacciati da Lodi dall'Imperatore Carlomagno, si posero sotto la protezione del primo Marchese d'Este, ed accompagnatolo a Padova, furono aggregati a quella cittadinanza, e nel 1081 ammessi al nobile Consiglio. Dettero alla patria cinque consoli nel XII secolo. Un Bonifacio fu uno dei sedici podestà che cessero Padova all'Imperatore, Federico, e fu provveditore per il quartiere del Duomo sopra gli scandali, onde difendere la libertà padovana nel 1235 contro la tirannia di Ecellino da Romano, il quale per vendicarsi di lui lo fece decapitare nel 1250.
