Originaria de Lombardía, fue traída a Sicilia por un Giovanni, al servicio del rey Guillermo el Malo, y después de haber defendido la vida de ese soberano en la famosa conspiración de Matteo Bonelli, el castillo Megerio con sus dependencias lo recompensó. Hijo de Giovanni fue Goffredo, quien fundó un monasterio en Lentini, y cuyo hijo Giacomo fue exiliado locamente en 1194. A Matteo fue conde de Adernò en 1303, conde y señor de Sclafani en 1330, señor de Centorbi, Ciminna y Chiuse, un poderoso barón de la época y rival del Chiaramonte, murió en 1354 después de construir un magnífico palacio en Palermo, la iglesia y el monasterio de S. Chiara, la iglesia de S. Agostino y la de S. Nicolò dell'Albergaria. Con él, la familia se extinguió, cuyos bienes y títulos pasaron a la casa Moncada. (Otras fuentes en: El Blasón en Sicilia).
