Ignorasi l'origine della famiglia che tuttavia si presume derivino dalla vicina Liguria: i nominativi infatti sono citati negli elenchi delle famiglie che dal 1250 al 1500 ottennero dal Consiglio degli Anziani facoltà di traffico in Genova, e nel suo territorio per l'impiego di somme in commerci marittimi e terrestri; il nome inoltre, che non lascia dubbi sul suo significato, era assai comune su quelle Riviere ove erano altrettanto leciti i commerci di schiavi e prigionieri catturati nelle guerre in terra e sui mari contro i barbareschi. Gli S. sono presenti in Voghera sin dal 1133 ove un Johannes Sclavus è parte in causa in una vertenza col monastero del Salvatore di Pavia giudicata il 13 aprile. A Tortona sono inclusi nell'elenco delle famiglie nobili fiorenti nell'anno 1293 pubblicato poi a Milano nel 1503 da Agostino Guidobono senatore di quella città; in Alessandria il 24 marzo 1293, podestà, anziani e consiglieri,
