Famiglia antichissima, con memorie certe dal sec. XIV, originaria di Alessandria. Il primo, di cui si abbia notizia, è un Emanuele, decurione alessandrino negli anni 1393 e 1396. Nacque da lui Ambrogio, decurione nel 1414, padre di Giacomo, di Domenico, di Bandolino autore di un'altra linea finita, e di Arpino, che morì a Roma nel 1428 dopo di essere stato successivamente aricidiacono di Alessandria, abate di S. Pietro, prevosto di S. Romualdo a Malines, di S. Donato a Genova, referendario della doppia segnatura, cameriere segreto e segretario dei memoriali. Era pronipote del suddetto Giacomo il decurione Castellino che, morto nel 1530, aveva ricuperato da un soldato imperiale una delle Sante Spine rubata nel sacco famoso di Roma (1527) e che ora si venera nella cattedrale di Alessandria.
