Antico ed assai nobile casato piacentino, di origine scozzese, originariamente detto Scotti Douglas, un cui ramo, dal XV secolo alla fine del XIX, possedette il Castello di Carpaneto, da cui trasse il predicato odierno. Davide, vivente nel XII secolo, è considerato il capostipite della famiglia Scotti e, dal di lui figlio, Lanfranco nacquero Giovanni, Ruffino, Rolando e Rinaldo. Primo esponente di grande rilievo del casato fu Alberto I Magno. Nel sec. XIV furono ricorrenti gli scontri e i momenti di tensione tra gli Scotti e i Visconti: il figlio di Alberto, Francesco, detto "il Milite" (sec. XIV), riaffermò, nel 1335, il potere della sua famiglia su Piacenza, ma dovette cederlo, l'anno seguente, ad Azzone Visconti. A rendere stabile il potere degli Scotti fu, nel 1414, Alberto II, il quale ottenne, dall'Imperatore Sigismondo di Lussemburgo, il dominio di Fiorenzuola ed il riconoscimento dei legami di discendenza della famiglia dal ceppo scozzese
