La famiglia di Ferrara, secondo alcuni scrittori, è originaria di Vicenza, e la farebbero derivare dallo stesso ceppo degli Scrovigni o Scrovegni di Padova. E' certo che un ramo di essa si trasferì a Ferrara nel sec. XVII, ove l'8 maggio 1677, un conte Giuseppe, di altro Giuseppe, con deliberazione del magistrato decemvirale ottenne la cittadinanza ferrarese. Nella nuova patria si distinse in modo particolare, e contrasse alleanze colle prime famiglie ferraresi. Ebbe il titolo comitale anteriormente al 1500, e fu ascritta al 1° Ordine patrizio del Consiglio Centumvirale negli anni 1700 e 1751. Tremelio Scroffa, di Ferrara, fu ascritto anche nel Libro d'Oro dei titolati di Venezia coi titoli di conte e consigliere della città di Ferrara nel 1749, dall'autorevolissimo magistrato veneto, qual fu quello dei Provveditori sopra i feudi; dal quale Tremelio discendono gli attuali membri della nobile famiglia di Ferrara.
