Según algunos escritores, la familia Ferrara es originaria de Vicenza, y la derivarían de la misma cepa que los Scrovigni o Scrovegni de Padua. Es cierto que una rama de la misma se mudó a Ferrara en el siglo. XVII, donde el 8 de mayo de 1677, un conde Giuseppe, otro Giuseppe, con la resolución del magistrado decemviral obtuvo la ciudadanía de Ferrara.
