Antigua e ilustre familia siciliana, originaria de Castilla. La tradición dice que esta cognominación, originalmente Escuderio, fue tomada después de que Antonio salvara la vida del rey Juan II de Castilla con su escudo. Pasó con certeza en Sicilia, en el siglo XV, con un Francesco Scuderi, militando bajo el mando de Fernando el Católico, contra Carlos VIII de Francia, pasó de Valenza a Nápoles y luego al Monte San Giuliano, donde se instaló. Entre los miembros que más lo ilustraron, mencionamos: Nicolò, el juez pretoriano de Palermo en 1575-76; Diego, regente del reino de Sicilia en Madrid en 1593; Carlo, conservador en Acireale en 1695; Giuseppe, noble acatapano en 1775-76; Martino Maria, conservador en Acireale en 1788, quien, con el privilegio del 8 de agosto de 1798, obtuvo el título de Barón de Villanova y juró en dicha ciudad en los años 1806-7, 1812-12; Giuseppe Scuderi y Fighera, noble
