Antichissima famiglia romana, passata in Sicilia, con un Luigi, al tempo dell'imperatore Federico II, dal quale, il detto Luigi, in ricompensa dei preziosi servigi militari prestati, ricevette in feudo di Belmonte. Tal casato che, nel 1365, acquisì il castello di Siracusa, mantenendone la proprietà per circa tre secoli, sempre, si distinse per gli illustri personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, ricordiamo: Giovanni, milite siracusano, regio algozirio e capitano di Girgenti, il quale, con privilegio del 16 gennaio 1398, ebbe concessione, con titolo baronale, il feudo di S. Cosimano; Antonino, nipote del precedente, luogotenente della camera reginale e conte di Augusta, per concessione, nell'anno 1440, di re Giovanni; Giovanni, figlio del detto Antonino, che sposò Eleonora Statella, la quale lo rese padre di Giovan Battista, ricevuto nell'ordine di Malta, nell'anno 1517, capitano della galera S.
