Cette maison est connue en Languedoc depuis Géraud Rossel, qui signa comme témoin, le 3 des ides d'octobre 1231, un accord fait entre Raymond Vll, comte de Toulouse, et Raymond, abbé de Gaillac. Etablie plus tard dans la Picardie, elle serait revenue en Vivarais, puis dans le bas Languedoc, en 1440, et y aurait formé souche des Rossel de Fontarhches, maintenu par jugement de M. de Bezon, et des Rossel de Cercy Tannoy, dont la généalogie est donnée par la Chenaye des Bois (XII, 331). Jacques de Rossel, écuyer, était bailli du Comté de Crussol au XVII siècle, il avait épousé Claude de Rossel, fille du seigneur de Sainte-Anastasie et de Marie de Puech. Il fut maintenu par jugement souverain du 19 novembre 1668. Les Rossel de Cercy et de Tannoy portaient d'après L. de La Roque « d'azur, à trois tortues d'or. » Voir: La Chenaye des Bois.
