Una tradizione famigliare pretende di far discendere gli Elti da una famiglia Held, patrizia di Norimberga, e, più in là, da un "nobile Corrado Helt di Hagelsheim castello della Franconia". Dai documenti all'incontro risulta che il loro paese di origine fu la vallata di Rauris nel Salisburghese, dove fino dalla seconda metà del secolo XV si trovano tracce di una famiglia di agricoltori proprietari di nome Held, alcui membri della quale, sul finire di quel secolo, passarono, indubbiamente per ragioni di commercio, a Gemona, grossa borgata nell'alto Friuli, e vi posero stabile dimora. Le famiglie dei conti Elti e dei conti Elti Zignoni discendono ambedue da un Andrea, che appare per la prima volta in un documento del 1496 dell'Archivio com. di Gemona e che nel 1505 venne ascritto a quel Consiglio. Questi nel suo testamento rogato dal notaio Girolamo Orsetti nel 1524 (Arch. not. Udine) é chiamato Ser Andreas
