La famiglia è antichissima di Francia. Sua Santità Pio IX con Breve del 1° ottobre 1847 creò principe di Umbriano del Precetto, Luigi Francesco Alfonso di Montholon marchese di Semonville e suoi discendenti per ordine di primogenitura. S.S. Leone XIII con Breve 24 settembre 1898 estese la trasmissibilità anche nella linea secondogenita. Il titolo di marchese Sémonville, per eredità della famiglia Huguet, fu concesso da S. M. Carlo X, re di Francia, il 24 agosto 1829. I Montholon erano stati creata conti dall'imperatore francese il 28 maggio 1809. Questa famiglia oriunda di Lorena, diede molti magistrati al Parlamento di Metz. Con decreto ministeriale 10 settembre 1903 fu riconosciuto nei titoli di principe di Umbriano del Precetto (mpr.), conte di S. Michele (mpr.) e nobile romano (mf.), e con R. I. 14 aprile 1904 e RR. LL. PP. 15 settembre stesso anno, S. M. il Re d'Italia estese la trasmissibilità eventuale
