Varia è l'ortografia del cognome di questa famiglia, perchè talvolta alterata in Bennati ed anche in Benatti. Non si hanno di essa notizie in Finale anteriori al secolo XVIII. Comunemente si ritiene d'origine Bolognese; abbiamo però memoria di un Giacomo B. di Roncaglio di Sotto (località del Basso Modenese) che l'11 maggio 1601 ottenne privilegio di cittadinanza dalla Comunità di Modena. Non possiam dire che a costui si attacchi in qualche maniera la discendenza della famiglia di cui si tratta, la quale cominciò ad emergere in Finale nell'ultimo quarto del Settecento. Infatti figura tra le famiglie che nel 1779 vennero ascritte al Libro d'Oro del Finale che venne bruciato nel 1799 dai rivoluzionari. Da allora in poi diede alla patria dottori e letterati che spesso ricoprirono importanti cariche cittadine. Ottenne la reinscrizione alla nobiltà del Finale il 20 dicembre 1821, in persona di Giuseppe, di Francesco. La famiglia è iscritta
