Casa antigua y muy noble de probable origen lombardo con ramas familiares repartidas en varias regiones del norte y centro de Italia donde existen variantes de apellido como Seragli, Seraglii... Cabe señalar que la forma original del apellido no siempre se mantuvo intacta en los siglos con su escritura primitiva. Muchas veces debido a transcripciones incorrectas, transformaciones dialectales según las regiones por donde se fue moviendo el linaje, la escritura incomprensible de los escribas, etc., hubo cambios en la fonética y la escritura. En cualquier caso, se atribuyen a la nobleza en Lombardía bajo la forma Seraglio, en Emilia Romagna bajo la forma Seragli o Seraglii. El escudo de la familia muestra que pertenece al bando gibelino y también, en el caso del escudo de armas de la rama de Módena, al bando güelfo.
