Chi ha voluto far discendente i Del Sera da quale Ricevuto di Giovanetto da S. Donato in Poggio che ai primissimi del trecento avrebbe aiutato validamente i fiorentini nella occupazioni del castello di Semifonte, ha dovuto avvalorare, tale ipotesi con la costante esenzione dalle impostazioni della quale i Del Sera appaiono gratificati. Ma lo stato non grande in cui vissero durante tutto il governo repubblicano, nel quale essi figurano per la prima volta nello squittinio del 1524 con Francesco, di Luca, di Miniato, fa seriamente dubitare che i motivi dell'esenzione dalle gabelle dovessero avere un'origine alquanto più modesta. Sorti assai migliori ebbe questa famiglia nel periodo del principato, nel quale Cosimo, di Neri, di Luca, depositario generale del granducato Ferdinando II, fu chiamato a far parte del Senato dei Quarantotto nel 1631, come lo fu suo figlio Paolo, nel 1672. Provvisti di forte censo, s'imparentarono con famiglie di primaria nobiltà,
