Dall'Istria venne questa famiglia nell'anno 805 ad abitare in Venezia, e nella serrata del maggior Consiglio del 1297 rimase compresa tra le famiglie patrizie. Oltre a quattro procuratori di S. Marco, e a diversi ambasciatori e podestà, dette alla veneta repubblica un Doge nella persona di Francesco succeduto a Nicola Contarini nel 1631. Era nato il 18 febbraio 1566 da Benedetto e Marina Contarini , come diplomatico aveva svolto importanti missioni presso l'imperatore Ferdinando II e il Papa Urbano VII. Tra i suoi famosi rappresentanti il bailo Paolo, segato vivo da Maometto II a Negroponte. Morì il 3 gennaio 1646, venne sepolto a San Martino, ma il suo cuore è sotterato a San Marco, secondo il desiderio da lui espresso nel testamento: lo lasciava alla patria, che aveva servito < di buon cuore> appunto, perchè lui e i suoi da lei < avevano ricevuto sempre tanti favori et Honori>.
