La famiglia è antichissima in Roma ed in ogni tempo ha dato personaggi di alto valore e si è imparentata con le più illustri case romane. Ricorderemo un Gregorio (1549), che si rese celebre per la sua non comune erudizione sotto papa Paolo III; Francesco, pro-governatore di Roma, uditore e decano del Tribunale della Sacra Rota, cardinale di S.R.C (n. 1823, dec. 1888). Furono consevatori di Roma: Francesco (1654), Girolano (1655), Giovanni Battista (1680), Francesco (1707, 1714, 1716, 1718), Domenico (1710, 1721, 1723), Girolamo (1735, 1760, 1769). Il sommo Pontefice Benedetto XIV, prescelse questa famiglia a formare una delle sessanta famiglie nobili romane coscritte nella persona di Girolamo, come dalla costituzione Urbem Roman del 4 gennaio 1746. Insignita del titolo marchionale ed aggregata alla nobiltà di Corneto. Questa casa ereditò i beni dell'antichissima famiglia Crescenzi, estinta col cardinale Marcello nel 1768, ed il nome viene aggiunta a quello dei S.
