La famiglia si disse anticamente "De' Cucciatti", dal castello o villa di Montecchio de' Cucciatti, nel contado cortonese, località di cui ebbe un tempo la signoria. Un Giacomo, di Giovanni, era stato de' priori di Cortona nell'anno 1460, e la stessa carica ebbe pure Lodovico nell'anno 1495. Jacopo, suo figlio, sposato ad una Vagnucci, assunse il titolo di "conte e nobile del S.R.I., e insigni dell'aquila imperiale il suo stemma gentilizio per analoga concessione fattane da Massimiliano I d'Austria - con diploma, da Augusta, 19 settembre 1518 - al vescovo cortonese Giovanni, protonotario apostolico di papa Leone X e legato pontificio alla corte imperiale (deced. il I° ottobre 1521) e a Nino, suo nipote, per loro e per tutti i loro discendenti. Galeotto, figlio di Ludovico del suddetto Jacopo, fu colonnello delle fanterie granducali di Toscana (1552); e il fratello di lui, frà Antonio, morto nel 1536, era stato ammesso
