Antica ed assai nobile famiglia italiana, la quale trae origine da due altrettanti nobilissimi casati. Il primo, ovvero quello dei Serra, tra origine da Gubbio, ove nel 1163, un Rinaldo era console e capitano. Più tardi un Michele, di Brunamonte Serra, con il figlio Bernardo, si stabilì in Bologna. Nel 1341 e nel 1347, altri di questa famiglia erano in Bologna, ma il primo di cui si posa parlare con certezza, è Napoleone Serra, alias della Malvasia, che viveva nel 1380, dal quale discese Francesco, da cui, a sua volta, vi fu un altro Napoleone, che ebbe due mogli: Rachele Caprara la prima e Lucrezia Bottrigari, la seconda. Questa famiglia, diventata bolognese, cominciò a farsi notare forse per le sue ricchezze.
