No está claramente esclarecida ni la procedencia, ni la formación de este apellido, en las fuentes consultadas se dice que tuvo su primitivo solar en el Reino de León, afirmación muy vaga e inconcreta, por el motivo de que el antiguo reino de León comprendía cinco provincias, las de Salamanca, Zamora, Valladolid, Palencia y León, no pudiendo concretar, su cepa inicial en ninguno de estos puntos geográficos, sin embargo en tiempos de Doña Juana "La Loca" y su hijo, el emperador Carlos V, fue litigada la hidalguía ante la Real Chancillería de Valladolid, los hermanos Juan y Cristóbal Serrano, ganando real carta ejecutoria concedida, el 23 de septiembre de 1549 y como el pueblo de Villafer pertenece a la provincia de León, nos indica que cercano a ese lugar existía un solar de la casa Serrano.
