Nobilissimo casato, il quale discende dai signori di Beaumont in Fiandra, passati nel 1359 a Venezia, con un Lazzaro o Lazaro, detto de Rotarii, che ivi pose stabile dimora. Quanto detto si ricava da un diploma di conte palatino, del 1465, esistente in semplice copia, nell'Archivio di Stato di Venezia, il quale sarebbe stato emanato, dall'Imperatore Federico III, il 6 febbraio 1465, a favore del nobile milite Lazaro Ferreo, di Giovanni, di Venezia, con la concessione della contea palatina a lui e successori maschi e della nobiltà del SRI anche alle femmine. Sul calar del secolo XVI, i Ferro si divisero in due linee. La prima rimasta a Venezia ebbe dal Senato di Roma con SC 11 ottobre 1624 la nobiltà romana nelle persone di Alvise avvocato e Giovanni dottore in teologia, figli di Lazzaro, e dall'Imperatore Leopoldo con diploma dato da Vienna 19 ottobre 1658 il riconoscimento della contea
