Il Mugnos sull'autorità di vari scrittori spagnuoli ricorda essere la famiglia S. una delle più nobili ed illustri di Catalogna, che ha dato uomini chiari armati cavalieri da Carlo Magno al tempo della liberazione de' Mori. Il primo a passsare in Sicilia fu un Calcerano S. capitano a' servigi di re Pietro di d'Aragona dal quale fu eletto governatore e castellano della terra e castello di Licata 1282, non che onorato del titolo di barone. Sono da ricordarsi: un secondo Calcerano milite sotto re Ludovico 1343, dal quale ebbe concesso il fiume Salso; un Vitale castellano di Girgenti, capitandarme a guerra 1435, armato regio cavaliere da re Alfonso; un Nicolò regio familiare; un Giuseppe barone di fiume Salso, cavaliere virtuoso e ricco, che a sue spese edificò in Licata un monastero di donne dell'ordine cisterciense; un Nicolò Guglielmo cavaliere gerosolimitano assai prode 1613.
