Antica e nobile lucchese, che i genealogisti pretendono di far derivare da Sesto di Moriano, dal quale presero il cognome nel sec. XVI, con Benedetto, di Rocco da Sesto; mai si trovano con Guadarello, di Passavante, fin dal secolo XIV presenti in Lucca, dove poi tornarono anche nel Borgo a Buggiano, e nel secolo XVI da Milano. Ebbe dal 1551 al 1798 numerosi gonfalonieri e anziani nel governo della Repubblica, e due noti annalisti cittadini: Girolamo (1690-1756) autore di una "Storia diplomatica di Lucca" e Giovanni Battista (1666-1734) compilatore degli "Annali di Lucca", opere, purtroppo, rimaste inedite. La famiglia Sesti fu iscritta nel Libro d'Oro della Repubblica lucchese, nel 1628, e ottenne, dal duca Carlo Lodovico di Borbone, la conferma della nobiltà e del patriziato ereditario, in persona Girolamo, marito di Isabella Fanucci, di Silvio, ed in persona di Giuseppe, di Domenico; ambedue iscritti nel Libro d'Oro del Ducato lucchese,
