Antica e assai nobile famiglia marchigiana, con importanti insediamenti anche in Toscana, di chiara e avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, d'Europa e del mondo. La genesi di questo cognome risale all'età medievale e si è diffuso per la venerazione di San Severo, vescovo di Ravenna nel IV secolo, e San Severino, eremita vescovo del V secolo, apostolo di Nòrico, sepolto a Napoli. In ogni modo, come riportato dal commendator G.B. di Crollalanza nei volumi del suo "Dizionario storico-blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane", opera pubblicata a Pisa nel 1886 in tre volumi di oltre 1400 pagine, la casata ebbe nobile residenza nella città di Pesaro. Inoltre essa, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
