Famiglia feudataria dai tempi di re Carlo I di Angiò, patrizia napoletana del seggio di Porto. Venne decorata dei titoli di marchese di S. Giuliano, con anzianità dal 1612, marchese di Gagliati, con anzianità dal 1626 e dei predicati di Palmoli e Pascoli; e per successione Carafa, personalmente, dei titoli di conte di Policastro, concesso nel 1496; duca di Forlì, concesso nel 1625; duca di Forlì, concesso nel 1625; duca della Chiusa, concesso nel 1738; riconosciuti con R. Assenso, 11 luglio 1897, a Maria Longo, marchesa di Gagliati e di S. Giuliano; spos. al nobile Giovan Lorenzo Tortora Brayda di Belvedere. Del titolo di conte di Policastro fu autorizzato l'uso, per anticipata successione materna, al figliolo Camillo, segretario di Legazione.
