Antica ed assai nobile famiglia veneta, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Essa ebbe principale dimora in Verona ed in Vicenza ma alcuni suoi esponenti ebbero possedimenti anche in Germania e, più precisamente, in Baviera. Proprietari terrieri sì i Severo ma anche brillanti nell'esercizio delle professioni giuridiche. Molti di loro si addottorarono infatti in entrambe le leggi mentre altri di dedicarono al notariato. Un'altra nobile linea dei Severo fiorì nobilmente in Rieti, ma ebbe dimora anche a Pettorano e Vallosensa. Trasferitasi sin dal 1490 nel regno di Napoli, si stabilì permanentemente a Giovinazzo nel 1738. In questa famiglia si estinse la nobile famiglia Vernice di Giovinazzo. Gaetano Vernice, ultimo del suo nome, adottò Francesco con l'obbligo di aggiungere detto cognome e di partire lo stemma. Aggregata nel 1750 alla nobiltà della città di Giovinazzo, fu essa riconosciuta nobile con D.M. 30

Inquartato; nel 1° e 4° d'oro, all'aquila di nero linguata di rosso posata su delle pile di rotelle (o botti cerchiate), esse stesse posate su un terreno di verde; nel 2° e 3° troncato in scaglione di nero e di rosso alle tre teste d'uomo barbute e recise, le due del capo affrontate; allo scaglione d'argento attraversante sulla troncatura.

Blasone della famiglia Severo in Veneto ricostruito da un disegno presente nell'opera: "Veronensia Vicentina Insignia eorum nobilium qui ys m locis celebres habentur. Ordines ergo duo, singule ordine alfabeti consesti" custodita presso la Biblioteca Reali di Baviera.
