La storica casa che dette sei duchi di Milano (1430-1535), ebbe per stipite Muzio Attendolo, che viveva nel 1326. Contrariamente a quanto afferma un'antica leggenda che lo voleva figlio di contadini, apparteneva ad una famiglia che il Solieri nel suo volume: "Le origini e la denominazione della famiglia a Cotignola" (Bologna 1897), dimostra essere di nobile condizione, ricca e potente. Da Muzio nacque Giovanni, e da questi Muzio (28 maggio 1367), al quale Albergo da Barbiano dette il soprannome per certo suo indomito vigor d'animo, che poi nel 1424, alla morte di Muzio, per desiderio di Giovanna II, di cui egli era gran connestabile, fu sostituito al cognome Attendolo, restando così ereditario in tutta la sua discendenza.
