The surname Sharp is of English origin. It was a nickname derived from the Middle English 'scharp', keen, active, quick, cutting, smart ( Old English 'scearp' ). The name thus comes to signify 'the sharp'. Naturally this was a sobriquet likely to be handed down as being complimentary. In historical archives there are several instances where a child has recieved the baptismal name Luke, which looks as if a little humour were intended. The old Scottish name Macilheran was anglicized Sharp, perhaps from the faint assonance of 'guer', 'giar' ( sharp ) with 'ciar-an'; the Irish Gaelic name O'Gearin has also been anglicized to Sharp for the identical reoson, the adjective 'gear' means sharp. The name dates back as far back as the tenth century were a Healoegn Scearpa is recorded in historical archives. The surname has evovled through Scharp, Serp, and Sarp, until it reached the modern form we know today Sharp. This name was brought to America predominately by English immigrants. One of the first fore fathers to bring this name to America is that of a John Sharp, formerly of London, a planter, who came to America aboard the Albion; he settled at St.Vincent. This name is the three-hundredth and thiry-third most common surname in America.
