Anticamente detta de Sicali, tal casato è originario di Bobbio, ove, secondo una tradizione raccolta da fra Leandro Alberti, sarebbe scampata da Genova a causa di civili discordie. Secondo altri invece, sarebbe un ramo della famiglia Sicali di Piacenza. Comunque, non giova fermarsi a discutere di avvenimenti che non hanno alcun substrato storico. Sembra invece che nel 1417, da Bobbio, un tal Sicali, di Gerardo Sicali, trasferitosi a Bologna, ivi si accasasse e fosse poi fatto cittadino originario di quella città dal cardinale legato (21 dic. 1427). Un figlio di costui, Antonio, verso la metà del sec. XV, passò a Modena, dove sposatosi con Lodovica Molza, stabilì la famiglia che dal patronimico dell'avo oltre che de' Sicali fu chiamata anche de' Colombi, cognome questo che poi prevalse definitivamente.
