Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno delle Due Sicilie, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Questa illustre casata risulta iscritta nel libro d'Oro della Nobiltà Italiana e nell'elenco ufficiale dei Nobili Italiani, con i titoli di Marchese di Rende e conte di Gigliano. Fu aggregata alla nobiltà di Giovinazzo nel 1758 ed ammessa nelle Reali Guardie del corpo nell'anno 1832. Illustratasi per dignità ecclesiastica e porpora cardinalizia, fu decorata del titolo di conte di Gigliano, riconosciuto poi con R.D. 15 aprile 1929 e RR. LL. PP. 7 nov. dello stesso anno. Ebbe ancora, per refuta della casa Caracciolo di Torella, il titolo di marchese di Rende, titolo riconcesso, con R. D. 12 settembre 1836, ad Angelica Caracciolo, moglie del cav. Giovanni Siciliano; titolo che venne poi riconosciuto, con Decreto Ministeriale del 3 luglio 1929 a Giovanni Siciliano (Parigi, 15 agosto 1865
