Antiga família alemã, de nítida e ancestral virtude, que se propagou, ao longo dos séculos, em diversas regiões da Europa e do mundo. De acordo com o que foi transmitido, esta família pertenceu à antiga nobreza dos "Uradel", termo cunhado apenas nos tempos modernos, em referência a famílias nobres cuja linhagem ancestral pode ser rastreada até antes da Idade Média. Contrasta com "Briefadel" (lit. "carta de nobreza"), títulos criados por cartas patentes do rei, moda que, influenciada pela prática francesa, foi introduzida na Alemanha sob o imperador Carlos IV (r. 1346-1378). Aliás, esta família, em todas as épocas, sempre se destacou, graças às figuras destacadas, que lhe deram origem, no serviço público, nas profissões liberais e no serviço militar. Entre estes, sem subestimar os omitidos, gostaríamos de mencionar: Tilo, eminente jurista, florescente em Leipzig, no final do século XV; Heinrich, jurista erudito, trabalhando na Universidade de Tübingen, florescendo em 1511;
