Famiglia originaria di Genova dove fu annoverata nel 1528 fra le 28 che tennero Albergo. Si diramò in Lentini, Palermo, Messina, Aquila, Lecce e Cosenza. Da Cosenza un ramo passò a Napoli con un Carlo, ambasciatore nel 1598 dell'imperatore Rodolfo II al Sultano, e vi fu iscritto al seggio di Portanuova. Per parentela contratta con la casa Buoncompagni, un ramo fu aggregato anche alla nobiltà romana. Venne decorata del titolo di principe di Tiriolo dal 1630; duca di Gimigliano dal 1713; conte del S.R.I. per concessione del 1597 esecutoriata nel regno nel 1703, principe di Marsicovetere per successione Caracciolo con anzianità dal 1629. Fu ricevuta per giustizia nell'ordine gerosolimitano nel 1706 e dichiarata per la sua nobiltà ammissibile nell RR. Guardie del Corpo nel 1844.
