La famiglia era nota in Reggio fin dal sec. XVI con un Agostino Silva, vivente nel 1512. Gian Nicolò, nel 1545, era Doctor Colegiatus, e Alfonso, notaro nel 1590. Nel 1631 Prospero fu rettore degli Orfanotrofi. Nel novembre del 1624 un Giambattista Silva alloggiò il cardinale Bentivoglio. Ippolito, di Carlo, di Agostino, sacerdote. Suo nipote Carlo, di Agostino, di Carlo, vivente nel 1664, ricchissimo, fu assassinato in casa sua il 2 nov. 1696. Questa famiglia ebbe nel sec. XVII parecchi frati e monache, come i fratelli don Giovanni e don Alessandro, di Bernardino, di Nicolò, che entrarono nel convento di S. Marco; la loro sorella Silvia, monaca in S. Raffele, e il loro nipote Alfonso, che fu carmelitano col nome di don Giuliano, e divenne priore nel 1647. Giambattista, di Prospero Agostino, di Carlo, nel 1671 era vedovo di Anna, di Paolo Ferretti e in seconde nozze sposò Barbara Tacoli.
