Ancient and very noble Spanish family, originally known as Silvestre, arrived in Southern Italy, on several occasions, since the time of the arrival in Italy of the Aragonese kings. In Spain the family was part of the most important knightly orders and guilds, such as: Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara, Montesa, Carlos III and Malta. The Silvestre also owned lordships in the Kingdom of Valencia, Navarre, Catalonia and Castile. In Italy the first certain references to the family, formerly Silvestri, are in Sicily in the thirteenth century. A Giovanni Silvestri, a cleric from Palermo, was in fact appointed by King Piero, on 11 January 1283, as Sub-Ciantro of the Royal Chapel of Palermo.
